About Department
ITU Environmental Engineering Department, a leader in conducting Environmental Engineering education and research in Turkey, commenced its postgraduate education at the Department of Civil Engineering, Faculty of Construction in 1973 based at the Taşkışla Campus. The Department of Environmental Engineering was established within the same Faculty in 1975. Undergraduate education in the department began in 1978. In the years of its establishment, 2 Professors, 4 Assistant Professors and 4 Research Assistants worked at the Department. The department was moved to the Ayazağa Campus along with other departments of the Faculty of Construction in 1982.
Our department switched to English-Language Supported Education (ESE) at the beginning of the 1989-1990 Academic Year in coordination with our university. This program enables undergraduate students to take some of the courses in English. Compulsory education in two languages commenced in the 1997-1998 Academic Year. The department also conducts a Double Major Program with 9 different undergraduate programs of ITU, allowing successful students to have the opportunity to receive a bachelor's degree in a second major.
Students of the department first participated to the Erasmus exchange program in the 2004-2005 Academic Year, providing students the opportunity to study for one or two semesters in the Environmental Engineering Departments of international universities that have a bilateral agreement with ITU. In accordance with the quality assurance strategy, ITU initiated accreditation studies of engineering undergraduate programs in the early 2000s. The Environmental Engineering Undergraduate Program was included in this initiation and successfully completed the ABET 2000EC Substantial Equivalency process. Currently, ITU Environmental Engineering Undergraduate Program is accredited by ABET Engineering Accreditation Commission (ECA) ( www.abet.org; Criteria: Environmental Engineering).
